| This cemetery has served the community of Thrifty since 1862. The
first grave recorded has the date 1862, (stone slab). The name is not
legible. The oldest birth date within the county is that of Charles
Mullins, born April 5, 1790 in Virginia. It is known that at least 3
people buried here were killed by Indians. Mr. W C Love, November 13,
1864, Mrs. Bill Williams and her son, December 1873, the son lived about
three weeks in the Mullins household, but died from his wounds. Both are
buried in the same grave, in the northeast corner. The Mud Creek
Cemetery Association placed a marker at this grave site in 1987. When
the first person was buried here this property belonged to Mr. Malcom
Hunter. He owned a stage stop, which also served as a headquarters for
the "Frontier Defense". Later this property belonged to Mr. Riley Cross
and his wife Lucy (Mullins) Cross. The deed is recorded in the Brown
County Courthouse, Volume 361, page 426. This same track of land became
the refinery for the "Fry Oil Field". Here the refinery, Post Office and
many homes were erected in 1927. Today nothing remains of the Fry
Community. |
